Dystopia Trailer
Serenity. Joss Whedon. PG-13. 2005
Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and the crew of his space craft Serenity flee the government assassin who are trying to capture River (Summer Glau) a telepathic woman who the government has conditioned to be their weapon.
In this trailer the dystopia is established as a bureaucratic dystopia with a violent and controlling government called the Alliance. The main character, Mal, opposes the Alliance both because he and his crews are criminals and because the Alliance has sent an assassin to recapture River, one of his crew members. The director quickly shows the main characters opposing the Alliance through both clips of Mal and the antagonist. The director also uses technological looking text to set the premise that there is "an emprie in pursuit" of River. The music is all very technological which matches the futuristic setting. The shots are mostly close ups or actions shots that increase tension. It ends with a quick montage of short shots with dramatic music and dialogue overlayed on some of the clips.
I think in our trailer we may end in a similar way, with short dramatic shots and music. We will probably also use the same sort of technological style, since our dystopia is based around technological abuses by the government.
